This project, developed on the premises of the Architecture Department at BUET, is a floating modular structure designed for quick deployment during emergencies, such as flood relief efforts. The module is an affordable, scalable, and transportable solution tailored for temporary use by relief groups.
Key Features:
- Dimensions: The module spans 12’ x 6’ (72 square feet), providing a larger and more efficient space compared to smaller alternatives.
- Construction: The module is built using four drums as floating supports, reinforced with Borak bamboo to achieve the long span. It was completed by two skilled craftsmen in just three hours, showcasing its simplicity and speed of assembly.
- Cost Efficiency: Constructing this module cost BDT 15,000. Comparative estimates suggest a 3’ x 8’ (24 square feet) module costs around BDT 9,000, while a 12’ x 12’ (144 square feet) module could cost BDT 28,000.
- Modularity and Adaptability: The design is modular, allowing scalability. Additional features like temporary shading, sanitary facilities, water storage, and other services can be integrated as needed.
- Transportability: The module is compact enough to fit inside a truck along with other relief supplies, making it ideal for remote deployments.
Impact:
This prototype demonstrates a space-efficient and cost-effective design, capable of being replicated at scale. With adequate funding, up to 10 modules can be implemented daily, and the design is open-source, enabling others to recreate and adapt it for their needs.
This project exemplifies how thoughtful design and resourcefulness can address urgent needs during crises, providing a tangible solution for affected communities.
